Both of these pictures look like fields of corn right? Wrong. As I am very slowly learning, not everything that looks like corn around here is in fact corn. The picture on the left is actually sorghum, while the picture on the right is corn. I don’t know if I just didn’t pay attention or something, but I don’t know that I ever saw sorghum growing before I came here and if I did I probably just thought it was corn. Out in the countryside here, they make many things out of corn and sorghum, so they grow lots of both. Before the heads come out on the corn, I swear it is impossible to tell the difference between the two. When they are grown, both have very distinct heads, but while they are still small, they look very similar. I think the locals here are getting tired of telling me the difference between the two and having to explain it again to me. My goal is to one day be able to glance at a field and immediately tell (before they have heads) whether it is corn or sorghum. Its good to have goals in life….for now this is mine.
I have officially disappointed all of my high school ag teachers as well as all of my college agriculture professors.
